Located near the mid-coast of Maine, lies a small rural town, comprised of back roads, rolling fields and friendly people that smile and wave as you pass them by. It’s quaint. It’s cozy. It’s home. It’s the inspiration for October Fields, est 2011.
Our foundational roots run deep as organic garlic and herb growers. Each year we plant and harvest several varieties of garlic, culinary & medicinal herbs, fruit and nut trees, and the seed list continues to grow! Retailing our seasonal produce on-line has offered affordable accessibility of organic goods to consumers nationwide. Our passion for cultivating awareness of healthy living has transcended well beyond our original goals into a complete plant based lifestyle brand for mind, body and home.
As always and without compromise, all October Fields goods are eco-friendly, non-gmo and vegan.
October is a great month isn’t it? In fact, it is our favorite month. The name “October” (from the Latin word “Octo” meaning “eight), came from October originally being the eighth month on the original Roman calendar. It retained its name after January and February were added.
Not only is October a cooler month here in Maine, and a shoulder month for the transitioning of the seasons, but many great things happen to occur in the month of October. October is the home to many wonderful events, holidays, and celebrations around the world. Thanksgiving in Canada, Children’s Book Week in England, Apple Day, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the American Cheese Month. But we fell in love with October for our own reasons. When everything happens in October, why not?
This is the short story. Husband, Chris and Wife, Sloane meet (for the very first time) in October, get hitched in October, buy the farm (with golden fields) in October, ship their first order of (now famous) organic garlic in October and crafted the soy candle that started it all…in October. Another small detail… Sloane’s birthday is on Halloween. So for us, the falling amber leaves and brisk autumn air is only the beginning to a month filled with special moments and memories, all capturing the essence of October Fields.
Our Organic Harvest
October Fields currently grows 3 varieties of garlic, but is most renowned for its rare Romanian Red, which yields large bulbs (often baseball size) and pungent, spicy cloves suitable for all culinary delights. The addition of 5 heirloom apple varieties, high bush blueberries, red raspberries, sea buckthorn berries and several nut bearing trees support the permaculture philosophy. Raised beds are home to over 30 culinary and medicinal herbs, which are hand harvested, dried and stored for year round retail or thoughtfully blended into balms, tinctures and teas. No matter the abundance nature provides, there is always a great appreciation for the care and positive energy that nurtured it. At October Fields we grow without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Our organic harvest is the result of sunshine, rain and gentle hands.
